A short hike on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail revealed a mostly continuous and skinable route up to Mount Monroe and Lake of the Clouds. It was 53F degrees when I left the trailhead and 47F degrees at 3500 feet. The winds were calm and there is roughly 1 to 3 feet of snow in most areas. The trail takes you along a northern aspect with dense trees, not surprisingly this is where you will find the deeper snowpack. In the exposed alpine, small patches and thin ribbons of snow are what’s left of the seasons snowpack. Much of the western aspects in the area have been scoured by prevailing winds, or has been melted by warm temperatures and sun. The trail that parallels the Cog Railway is devoid of snow for the climb up to Waumbek Station at 3900 feet.
