Snow Pit results on Baldface Knob

February 17, 2021 at 3:00 PM
Name: Joseph Kjeldsen
Location: East face of Baldface knob, top of GBA trails

Inch of F on top of quarter inch of Ice, then 1F weak layer, then a thick P wind slab (50ish cm) on top of 1F facetted. CT9 Q2 fail 10cm down, above wind slab. Then CT27 Q3 fail 60cm down below slab. ETCN.
Analysis: Top layer may fracture easily under skier. Slide would be small but potentially dangerous due to ice and snow density. Could also potentially trigger larger wind slab layer to slide on steeper slopes. Chose not to ski.
