A lot of whumpfing on north facing low elevation slopes

I was skiing low angle, low elevation terrain today. I saw no propagating cracks, but was surprised to hear 10 or so whumpfs as I traveled through north to northeast facing terrain. This was the only terrain I came across that had slab development, which I would have expected more on other aspects.
