Avalanche Advisory for Tuesday, January 3, 2017

Date: January 3, 2017
Today’s avalanche rating and problem are based on the best information we can gather this morning. With some degree of uncertainty in the weather forecast, safe travel in avalanche terrain today will require excellent observations on the conditions at the time you are traveiling. The avalanche problem today will begin as Wind Slab and transition to Storm Slab. The avalanche danger will increase through the day as precipitation arrives, likely taking place later in the day.

Avalanche Advisory for Wednesday, December, 28, 2016

Date: December 28, 2016
Our snowpack hit the reset button yesterday. A ¼” of water percolated into the snow. This fell lightly and over an extended period of time, allowing the snowpack time to adjust to a new load. Yesterday’s drop in temperature created a very firm snow surface. Keep in mind that this firm potentially slick surface will become a bed surface after Thursday’s storm. Light snow today will form small pockets under terrain features, but these will be easy to identify when compared to the dirty old surface.

Avalanche Advisory for Tuesday, December 27, 2016

Date: December 27, 2016
This morning, the avalanche problem will be Wet Slabs. The primary areas of concern would be the wind slab that formed in lee areas and under terrain features over the past weekend as these transition to wet slabs...As the snowpack freezes, beware of the potential for long, sliding falls. We may receive up to 2” of snow as the day progresses. Wind Slabs will develop.

Avalanche Advisory for Sunday, December 25, 2016

Date: December 25, 2016
....wind slabs are generally stiff and strong and therefore stubborn but weaker layers exist above the old icy crust. The greatest concern for a human-triggered avalanche is in the Lip and Center Bowl area of Tuckerman Ravine and in Central Gully in Huntington. Smaller but still potentially consequential pockets exist in many other areas so travel carefully and protect yourself before climbing into these pockets or avoid them altogether by staying on the old crust.

Avalanche Advisory for Wednesday, December 21, 2106

Date: December 21, 2016
Our current snowpack is dominated by the melt/freeze event that took place over last weekend. This surface layer is bridging weaknesses that may exist lower in the snowpack. It is also acting as the bed surface for future avalanches. The dusting of snow on Monday has left a few pockets of instability in the form of wind slabs.

Avalanche Advisory for Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Date: December 20, 2016
Today’s avalanche problem will be Wind Slab. These will likely be small, tucked under and behind terrain features, and easy to identify. However, with an icy surface underneath, even a small avalanche can create a significant hazard. This is due to the fact self-arresting on the slick surface will be next to impossible. Long, sliding falls are the main concern today. Crampons and an ice axe will be crucial to safe travel.

Avalanche Advisory for Monday, December 19, 2016

Date: December 19, 2016
This advisory expires at Midnight tonight. All forecast areas in Huntington and Tuckerman Ravine have LOW avalanche danger. Natural and human-triggered avalanches are unlikely. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features. AVALANCHE PROBLEM: Around half an inch of rain yesterday has effectively reduced our avalanche problem to Low. If it wasn’t for the possibility […]

Avalanche Advisory for Sunday, December 18, 2016

Date: December 18, 2016
Wet Slabs are the primary avalanche problem today. These are notoriously hard to predict and can range from small pockets to large and destructive avalanches. Wet slabs could occur in any of our avalanche paths and may release deep in the snowpack. . . Given the avalanche danger and the unsupportive walking or climbing surface, you might ask yourself why would you bother to enter avalanche terrain.

Avalanche Advisory for Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Date: December 13, 2016
AVALANCHE PROBLEM: Today's avalanche problem will be Wind Slab created from yesterday's storm and from today's winds. Snowfields are rapidly growing past early-season size. In places, some forecast areas are becoming connected with others. Small avalanches are possible in many locations and the potential for large avalanches now exist in a few locations, particularly the area from the Chute over to the Lip. Runouts are filling in, but still contain a number of boulders and broken cliff bands that create further hazards. Cautious route-finding today should be at the front of your mind.
